We’ve Got the Skinny on Paleo Vegan (aka Pegan)

April 9, 2019 BY Justin Patterson

The pegan diet is inspired by two of the most popular diet trends — paleo and vegan. According to, Dr. Mark Hyman, top functional medicine doctor & the creator of this style of eating, the pegan diet promotes optimal health by reducing inflammation and balancing blood sugar.

The main pillars of the pegan diet are:

  • stay away from sugar
  • avoid gluten
  • eat mostly plants (approx 75%)
  • go easy on fruits
  • eat healthy fats
  • eat moderate, high quality animal-based proteins

These pillars are in accordance with the lifestyle choice we support & embrace at Unbun Foods. It is possible to be on a perfect vegan diet, but still miss out on essential omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, zinc, and amino acids. It is also possible that being on a vegan diet includes refined sugars, starchy grains, processed oils, soy-based proteins, and harmful chemicals/additives. Incorporating the principles of the paleo diet, which supports whole foods & avoids processed ingredients, creates a bridge between two lifestyles that is very sustainable and incredibly healthy.

Our Vegan Keto Bun is quickly becoming the crowd favourite. We take pride that it is filed under the “healthy vegan” category. While similar to the initial product offering, Unbun Foods’ Vegan Keto Buns contain no egg, but are still keto, paleo, grain/gluten-free, and actually delicious.  The base is a combination of blanched almond flour, coconut milk, pumpkin seed protein, olive oil, coconut flour, psyllium husk and flax meal, amongst other clean and whole ingredients. We use clean fats, low inflammatory & low insulin response ingredients to make a product with a nutritional value is quite impressive.  Each bun contains:

  • 3g of Net Carbs
  • 12g dietary fibre
  • 11g protein
  • 18 g of healthy/good fats
  • Less than 1 g of naturally occurring sugar

You can find our Vegan Keto Bun at various retailers across Canada & US. Search for a location near you.
